For most, summer is the time for fun vacations, outdoor activities, and relaxation. However, for some, summer can also be a time of increased body dysmorphia and self-consciousness. With more skin-baring clothing and social events, the pressure to look a certain way can feel overwhelming. However, it’s important to remember that every body is a summer body.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others but can cause significant distress. Summertime, with its focus on beach/summer bodies and perfect tans, can exacerbate these feelings. Understanding that BDD is a serious condition and not just a vanity issue is the first step towards addressing it.
Social media can be a double-edged sword. While it may be a great source of entertainment and a way to connect us with friends and family, it often negatively contributes to body dysmorphia by posing unrealistic body standards, such as the “summer bod”, typically referring to a thinner physique. Individuals who don’t see themselves as having a “summer bod” may feel anxious about wearing certain clothing, such as crop tops or swimwear, in public or on social media, in fear of others’ perception of them. Furthermore, many might compare themselves to what they see on social media, however it’s important to remember that social media only shows the highlights, not the full picture.
Maintaining a positive relationship with yourself and your body every single day may be hard, especially in the summertime. However it is important to embrace your uniqueness and take care of yourself by incorporating small habits into your life, which combined can make a huge impact. These can include spending less time online, curating your social media feed to include body-positive influencers who celebrate diversity, engaging in activities that make you feel strong and get you moving, surrounding yourself with supportive and inspiring individuals, and celebrating the small wins. Every body is a summer body. The idea that you need to look a certain way to enjoy summer is a myth. Celebrate what makes you unique. Whether it's your freckles, curves, or scars, these features tell your story.
Active Circle strives to create safe, active connected communities, and the first step to doing this is accepting everyone’s uniqueness, in order to successfully live a mentally and physically healthy life. The communities that we create or work thrive on a non-judgment view, so that everyone feels honored and included.
Remember, everyone is perfect in their own ways, and your body doesn’t define your worth. Enjoy this summer and cherish every moment, finding comfort in your own body!
